Optical Calcite, or Iceland Spar, is a highly transparent, rhombohedral form of calcite known for extreme birefringence (double refraction). It splits light into two rays, causing a double image effect. Used historically by Vikings for navigation, it is now used in polarizing prisms and microscopes.
